Many Roads To The Same Goal : or… It’s my way or the highway?
There are many good ways to reach a goal, rarely just one. Frank Majka, SJ
“It’s my way or the highway”
a dictator’s trope
demanding blind submission
undermining my vote
fosters fear among the masses
all challengers oppress
with trumped up accusations
power grabbing press
“It’s my way or the highway”
a single voice is heard
incorrigible counsel
impertinent word
demanding acquiescence
to a sure dead end
with just one road to follow
we’re certain to descend
“It’s my way or the highway”
castle made of flaccid rope
built on a road to nowhere
belts and blusters without hope
but … from the beginning
common goodness is true source
benevolent leaders aver
countless ways endorse
“It’s my way or the highway”
a dictator’s trope
blind to generosity
squirming without hope … but
worthy leaders model goodness
breathing possibility
paving many roads
with audacious humility

Frank Majka, SJ’s quote is found in Sunday’s selection in An Ignatian Book of Days by James Martin, SJ, a series of daily reflections from the Spiritual Wisdom of St. Ignatius of Loyola. Throughout the book we hear the voices of St. Ignatius as well as many great thinkers and writers, long gone and present day, each uniquely revealing the way of finding God in all things. And that is my intention; to find God/Divine Presence/Ultimate Reality in whatever presents itself to me each day in 2024.
Each day I read, reflect and write on the selection, hoping to articulate the ways in which I come to know God/Divine Presence/Ultimate Reality via personal experience, impelled by the leading of my inner life.
