Why We Get Discouraged: or get to the next new thing
Our ancient enemy sets up all possible obstacles to turn us aside from the way on which we have entered. He makes use of everything to vex us. We find ourselves sad without knowing why. We cannot pray with devotion, nor contemplate, nor even speak nor hear of the things of God.
St. Ignatius Loyola
dis-couraged
dis-heartened
des-o-lation
three wily philanderers boldly agree
truth beauty and courage have abandoned me
dis-couraged
dis-heartened
des-o-lation
three oily branches of wormwood possess
poison to seize and sustain bitterness
dis-couraged
dis-heartened
des-o-lation
three probing fingers of abomination
demand sacrifice to dodge damnation
dis-couraged
dis-heartened
des-o-lation
three stinking gate-crashers uninvited guests
putting God’s grace and my grit to the test
Get behind me, satan,
you’ve no license to mince
my meddle with your
wicked connivance
dis-couraged
dis-heartened
des-o-lation
three stealthy helpers eclipsed from my view
whisper me welcome to my next debut

St. Ignatius Loyola’s quote is found in today’s selection in An Ignatian Book of Days by Jim Manney, SJ, a series of daily reflections from the Spiritual Wisdom of St. Ignatius of Loyola. Throughout the book we hear the voices of St. Ignatius as well as many great thinkers and writers, long gone and present day, each uniquely revealing the way of finding God in all things. And that is my intention; to find God/Divine Presence/Ultimate Reality in whatever presents itself to me each day in 2024.
Each day I read, reflect and write on the selection, hoping to articulate the ways in which I come to know God/Divine Presence/Ultimate Reality via personal experience, impelled by the leading of my inner life.
