“One” by Alex Grey

In today’s world, the inclination to praise rather than blame and always assume the person is operating out of sincere motives, is sorely needed. We seem to have forgotten that we are all part of the Great Work, that all persons are an expression of God’s loving presence — even those whose opinions are totally different than ours. They are still expressing some truth. And we need to look for the truth and build together on that foundation rather than focus on differences and tear each other apart. Pat Carter

8.2 billion pair of eyes
ONE
impossible
inconceivable
indescribable
incomprehensible
incredible
Great Work

what if I could see
through your eye pair?
azure oceans
consoling skies
your family
dream
passions blood
rose sacrifice
must i measure
red or blue
must I be blind
unseeing you?

8.2 billion points of view
ONE
ungraspable
unimaginable
uncontrived
unadorned
truth
to see and to be seen
to survive and to thrive
to bond and to belong
to make sense of the world

8.2 billion workers wroughting
ONE
Great Work

AND even as these aspirational words pour through me
I cycle through
sadness… anger… horror… sadness… anger….
turn to the imprecatory psalms… today this one speaks for me

Psalm 22
Help, O Lord, for there is no longer anyone who is godly;
the faithful have disappeared from humankind.
They utter lies to each other;
with flattering lips and a double heart they speak.

May the Lord cut off all flattering lips,
the tongue that makes great boasts,
those who say, ‘With our tongues we will prevail;
our lips are our own — who is our master?’

‘Because the poor are despoiled, because the needy groan,
I will now rise up,’ says the Lord;
‘I will place them in the safety for which they long.’
The promises of the Lord are promises that are pure,
silver refined in a furnace on the ground,
purified seven times.

You, O Lord, will protect us;
you will guard us from this generation for ever.
On every side the wicked prowl,
as vileness is exalted among humankind.

Pat Carter’s quote is found in today’s selection in An Ignatian Book of Days by Jim Manney is a series of daily reflections from the Spiritual Wisdom of St. Ignatius of Loyola. Throughout the book we hear the voices of St. Ignatius as well as many great thinkers and writers, long gone and present day, each uniquely revealing the way of finding God in all things. And that is my intention; to find God/Divine Presence/Ultimate Reality in whatever presents itself to me each day in 2024.

Each day I read, reflect and write on the selection, hoping to articulate the ways in which I come to know God/Divine Presence/Ultimate Reality via personal experience, impelled by the leading of my inner life.
