… serve the poor to learn… what real detachment is, what freedom to respond to God can mean, what humility can do to our hearts, and how we can be transformed by an experience of deep reliance on God.
Gary Smith, SJ

the grinding gut punch
unwelcome news
reverberates
swallowing fists full of butterflies
bleak broody wondering
what awaits?

deep summons deep
rouses heart’s
untroubled truth
polish the pearl of poverty
holding onto nothing
nothing can be lost

freedom
is the pearl of poverty
freedom from
attachment to impermanence
freedom for
unfettered reliance on God

yesterday i was stunned by the news
i must leave my casita sanctuary
today i turn my restless heart
to the One trustworthy part
admitting the poverty
of my soul and circumstance

Gary Smith SJ’’s quote is found in today’s selection in An Ignatian Book of Days by Jim Manney is a series of daily reflections from the Spiritual Wisdom of St. Ignatius of Loyola. Throughout the book we hear the voices of St. Ignatius as well as many great thinkers and writers, long gone and present day, each uniquely revealing the way of finding God in all things. And that is my intention; to find God/Divine Presence/Ultimate Reality in whatever presents itself to me each day in 2024.

Each day I read, reflect and write on the selection, hoping to articulate the ways in which I come to know God/Divine Presence/Ultimate Reality via personal experience, impelled by the leading of my inner life.
