The Cross In Our Life : sits in front of me
Human living offers an abundance of suffering and futility which cannot be mastered by sober courage alone. Christians (all people?) are called on to continue the sacrifice (as exemplified by Jesus, laying down his life for his friends)… Karl Rahner, SJ
stop seeking the will of God
in grand slam changing schemes
big books and pithy podcasts
can’t tell you what life means
take one step outside yourself
open your shuttered eyes
something right in front of you
is where you’ll recognize
will of God is not construed
of constructs and abstractions
consenting to the present bears
bountiful benefaction
but my eccentric ego wants
a flamboyant cause
would bypasss what’s in front of me
gleaning for applause
every hour every day
the perfect situation
is the moment of consent
resisting temptation
to discount simple suffering
standing in front of me
hoping for something more grand
than reality

Karl Rahner, SJ’s quote is found in today’s selection in An Ignatian Book of Days by Jim Manney, SJ, a series of daily reflections from the Spiritual Wisdom of St. Ignatius of Loyola. Throughout the book we hear the voices of St. Ignatius as well as many great thinkers and writers, long gone and present day, each uniquely revealing the way of finding God in all things. And that is my intention; to find God/Divine Presence/Ultimate Reality in whatever presents itself to me each day in 2024.
Each day I read, reflect and write on the selection, hoping to articulate the ways in which I come to know God/Divine Presence/Ultimate Reality via personal experience, impelled by the leading of my inner life.
