Open Hands : holding the Twin Towers
There are many things in my life to which I cling as with a clinched fist — my possessions for sure but the immaterial things as well — the work I do, the position I hold, the friends I have, my ideas. my principles, my image. I should open my fist, they still remain. Nothing drops out. But my hands are open and that is what prayer is. Peter van Breemen, SJ
compared to the cosmos
i am a gnat quivering
on grand piles of sand
250,000 ton towers trembling
35,000 humans displaced dead
on city’s open hand
what was tall in New York City
is small
smaller than a gnat’s imagination
therefore
i open my hands
hallow the tall
revere the small
welcome failure
accept success
bow to life
kiss the hem of death
tallest buildings in the world
cannot hold fast
life’s extreme limit
nor grasp
always we begin again

Peter van Breemen, SJ’s quote is found in today’s selection in An Ignatian Book of Days by Jim Manney is a series of daily reflections from the Spiritual Wisdom of St. Ignatius of Loyola. Throughout the book we hear the voices of St. Ignatius as well as many great thinkers and writers, long gone and present day, each uniquely revealing the way of finding God in all things. And that is my intention; to find God/Divine Presence/Ultimate Reality in whatever presents itself to me each day in 2024.
Each day I read, reflect and write on the selection, hoping to articulate the ways in which I come to know God/Divine Presence/Ultimate Reality via personal experience, impelled by the leading of my inner life.
