Maintenance For The Soul : exercise my spiritual muscles
In naming his spiritual practices ‘exercises’ Ignatius sought to suggest something about how we ought to approach them; as undertakings we must repeat again and again in order to progress slowly toward a goal… part of a regular maintenance for the soul. Tim Muldoon
i have a body
she enables me to
see hear smell taste touch pass through
so i exercise my body
my eyes
… see six white cosmos petals with gold dust pollen wondering
my ears
… hear sustained sound of cello moaning
my nose
… smells wet dirt ozone rising
my tongue
… tastes strawberry bouquet teasing
my arms
… lift and cradle Mojo the pup soundly submitting
my legs
… stride by rocks and slipstreams searching
i have a spirit
she enables me to behold
what I cannot see hear smell taste touch pass through
so i exercise
my eyes
… wondering what i cannot see
my ears
… moaning for what i cannot hear
my nose
… lingering with what i cannot smell
my tongue
… teasing what i cannot taste
my arms
… submitting to what i cannot touch
my legs
… searching for what i cannot pass through

Tim Muldoon’s quote is found in today’s selection in An Ignatian Book of Days by James Martin, SJ, a series of daily reflections from the Spiritual Wisdom of St. Ignatius of Loyola. Throughout the book we hear the voices of St. Ignatius as well as many great thinkers and writers, long gone and present day, each uniquely revealing the way of finding God in all things. And that is my intention; to find God/Divine Presence/Ultimate Reality in whatever presents itself to me each day in 2024.
Each day I read, reflect and write on the selection, hoping to articulate the ways in which I come to know God/Divine Presence/Ultimate Reality via personal experience, impelled by the leading of my inner life.
