Look At The Feeling : extinguish hate
Look at the feeling, not at the cause of the feeling. Why am I angry? Not, why did that person say that nasty thing? ….. attending to the objects of anger or lust tends to intensify them; reflectively attending to the affectations themselves tends to weaken them. Jules J. Toner, SJ
pick up the mirror look inside
follow anger expose false pride
paving the way for my downfall
’til I consent to wisdom’s call
attending to my affectations
liberates vain protestations
unties dread knot of history’s hold
myopic grip of black blindfold
quenching anger’s fevered flame
consenting to extinguish blame
exchange bloodless activity
for sighted sensitivity
pick up the mirror look inside
follow anger expose false pride
paving the way to elevate
compassion … and snuff out hate

Jules J. Toner, SJ’s quote is found in today’s selection in An Ignatian Book of Days by Jim Manney is a series of daily reflections from the Spiritual Wisdom of St. Ignatius of Loyola. Throughout the book we hear the voices of St. Ignatius as well as many great thinkers and writers, long gone and present day, each uniquely revealing the way of finding God in all things. And that is my intention; to find God/Divine Presence/Ultimate Reality in whatever presents itself to me each day in 2024.
Each day I read, reflect and write on the selection, hoping to articulate the ways in which I come to know God/Divine Presence/Ultimate Reality via personal experience, impelled by the leading of my inner life.
