Hate The Disorder In Your Own Soul: swallow your pride
…instead of hating the people you think are warmongers, hate the appetites and the disorder in your own soul, which are the causes of war. If you love peace, then hate injustice, hate tyranny, hate greed — but hate those things in yourself, not in another. Thomas Merton
inequity intolerance impropriety
injustice you prosecute
slinks my severe soul
aggression suppression oppression
tyranny you charge
skulks my superior soul
rapacious impatient possessiveness
greed you accuse
steals my insatiable soul
when I rudely accuse you of what I refuse
truth is … my insides
are spitting at you
so….
rather than brood over your feigned offense
I swallow flawed pride
desert my defense
claim the disorder of my unseen soul
free you from bondage
of my grievous hold

Thomas Merton’s quote is found in today’s selection in An Ignatian Book of Days by Jim Manney, SJ, a series of daily reflections from the Spiritual Wisdom of St. Ignatius of Loyola. Throughout the book we hear the voices of St. Ignatius as well as many great thinkers and writers, long gone and present day, each uniquely revealing the way of finding God in all things. And that is my intention; to find God/Divine Presence/Ultimate Reality in whatever presents itself to me each day in 2024.
Each day I read, reflect and write on the selection, hoping to articulate the ways in which I come to know God/Divine Presence/Ultimate Reality via personal experience, impelled by the leading of my inner life.
