Jeweled Breadcrumb #47 : awake to the something of nothing
To heal our double vision we must stay awake and ready to be surprised by God.
sometimes i dig deep down
to the bottom of my soul and find
nothing
nothing save ringing silence
watery swallow
not quite crimson rivers veining
behind my eyes
how long how long
must i wait
for strawberry
soap scent of heaven to arrive?
tantalize?
transfigure
nothing into something?
or
does it crystalize the other way?
fashioning the fingerhold of
something into nothing
i can name?
wrap my hands or mind around?
sometimes i dig deep down
to the bottom of my soul and find
something
of nothing

In the liturgical world in which I live, tomorrow is Sunday of the Transfiguration, a mountaintop moment for Jesus’ friends Peter, James and John, and a pivotal moment for the Christian tradition in which the seeming separation of humanity and divinity is fused. (Luke 9:28–36; see below) This is the moment in which dualistic thinking (ie Is Jesus human or is Jesus divine?) is meant to merge, a coming together in indistinguishability of divinity and humanity as revealed in Peter, James and John’s mountaintop moment with Jesus. The identicalness of humanity and divinity is made known to Jesus’ three astonished friends because they “stay awake.” They are observant, alert and ready to be surprised by God. The message is unmistakable. To heal our double vision we must stay awake and be ready to be surprised by God.

The assignment that brings me to the writing of these words is to unapologetically tell the story of how God nudges, cajoles, drop kicks and masters me to be the real human being that I am … becoming … following God’s Jeweled Breadcrumbs. My daily writing challenge for 2025 is to share the Breadcrumbs with you.

Luke 9:28–36 Jesus took with him Peter and John and James, and went up on the mountain to pray. And while he was praying, the appearance of his face changed, and his clothes became dazzling white. Suddenly they saw two men, Moses and Elijah, talking to him. They appeared in glory and were speaking of his departure, which he was about to accomplish at Jerusalem. Now Peter and his companions were weighed down with sleep; but since they had stayed awake, they saw his glory and the two men who stood with him. Just as they were leaving him, Peter said to Jesus, “Master, it is good for us to be here; let us make three dwellings, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah” — not knowing what he said. While he was saying this, a cloud came and overshadowed them; and they were terrified as they entered the cloud. Then from the cloud came a voice that said, “This is my Son, my Chosen; listen to him!” When the voice had spoken, Jesus was found alone. And they kept silent and in those days told no one any of the things they had seen.
