Ignatius Hated Selfishness : everyone is connected
If we really want what is best for ourselves we will work for the good of others… care for the comfort of others rather than our own.
Mike Aquilina & Kris Stubna
surrounded by tidal torrents
i am
a continental island fortress
shifted
to a sandy shelf
washed
of convention
rich with the spell
of profit and pleasure
oblivious
to you… and me
but
preaching from the grave
John Donne
protests
No man is an island
Entire of itself
Everyone is a piece
Of the continent
Of the main….
islands
are not floating fortress
merely shifting mantle
adorning sea
washed
of dire depths
rich with the spell
of beauty
attentive
to you … and me

The Spiritual Exercise quote is found in Sunday’s selection in An Ignatian Book of Days by James Martin, SJ, a series of daily reflections from the Spiritual Wisdom of St. Ignatius of Loyola. Throughout the book we hear the voices of St. Ignatius as well as many great thinkers and writers, long gone and present day, each uniquely revealing the way of finding God in all things. And that is my intention; to find God/Divine Presence/Ultimate Reality in whatever presents itself to me each day in 2024.
Each day I read, reflect and write on the selection, hoping to articulate the ways in which I come to know God/Divine Presence/Ultimate Reality via personal experience, impelled by the leading of my inner life.
