All our life is sown with tiny thorns that produce in our hearts a thousand involuntary movements of hatred, envy, fear, impatience, a thousand little fleeting disappointments, a thousand slight worries, a thousand disturbances that momentarily alter our peace of soul… these are not occasions for practicing very heroic virtue. But they are definitely enough to acquire it if we really wished it. St. Claude de la Columbiére, SJ

stubbed toe
splashed coffee
where are the keys hiding?
phone update
flight is late
patience backsliding
what is the password?
must she have the last word?
where is the end of the sticky tape?
it’s no ones intention
to stoke my contention
but must i endure
this lifeless lecture?
moth eaten sweater
day’s not getting better

what upright and worthy
stance may I take
out of these bothers
besetments to make
merit high-mindedness
fortitude
excellent character
smooth attitude?
O, to welcome
each tiny thorn’s imposition
refining my temperament
and disposition

St. Claude de la Columbiére, SJ’s quote is found in today’s selection in An Ignatian Book of Days by Jim Manney is a series of daily reflections from the Spiritual Wisdom of St. Ignatius of Loyola. Throughout the book we hear the voices of St. Ignatius as well as many great thinkers and writers, long gone and present day, each uniquely revealing the way of finding God in all things. And that is my intention; to find God/Divine Presence/Ultimate Reality in whatever presents itself to me each day in 2024.

Each day I read, reflect and write on the selection, hoping to articulate the ways in which I come to know God/Divine Presence/Ultimate Reality via personal experience, impelled by the leading of my inner life.
