Often we tell ourselves, or we are told, in an effort to quell our desires, to look at all the good we already have. We can be made to feel guilty or ungrateful for desiring what we want. But if we suppress our desires without being satisfied that God has heard us, we pull back from honesty with God (and ourselves).
William Barry, SJ

what do you really want?
in you midnight cinema
in your midday dream
what do your really really want?
what does the bird in your chest twitter?
what fantasy bold idea peppers your story?
what vague sensibility incites your desire?

what if desire is vintage music
conducting criss-cross tangles of life
igniting holy hunger laying bare the way
of being who you truly are?
what if desire is God’s calling card?
would you ignore God’s allure?
would you refuse a summons to life with Something More?

what do you really really really want?

William Barry, SJ’s quote is found in today’s selection in An Ignatian Book of Days by Jim Manney is a series of daily reflections from the Spiritual Wisdom of St. Ignatius of Loyola. Throughout the book we hear the voices of St. Ignatius as well as many great thinkers and writers, long gone and present day, each uniquely revealing the way of finding God in all things. And that is my intention; to find God/Divine Presence/Ultimate Reality in whatever presents itself to me each day in 2024.

Each day I read, reflect and write on the selection, hoping to articulate the ways in which I come to know God/Divine Presence/Ultimate Reality via personal experience, impelled by the leading of my inner life.
