Sometimes our desires are in fact good indicators of where we need to go or what course we need to take. But sometimes just the opposte is true. What I want so badly may scratch an ego itch but do nothing to further my purpose in life…. that is why we need discernment. Chris Lowney

floating above ridged bluffs
untethered feet
tread on cloud puffs

until

love calls
but is it?
lust?
my beloved?

whimsical wind whispers
what is your provenance?
invitation to sacred dance?
profane performance?

what is the warrant
writ on my heart?
how shall I discover
my beloved’s part?
resist ego’s anxious itch
slake my thirst
suffuse my ditch
refuse to dangle my feet
in uncooked courses
and deceit?

O God help me
plant my feet
on sound ground
good judgment seat
only your peace
and tranquility
will release
and hearten me

Chris Lowney’s quote is found in Sunday’s selection in An Ignatian Book of Days by Jim Manney, SJ, a series of daily reflections from the Spiritual Wisdom of St. Ignatius of Loyola. Throughout the book we hear the voices of St. Ignatius as well as many great thinkers and writers, long gone and present day, each uniquely revealing the way of finding God in all things. And that is my intention; to find God/Divine Presence/Ultimate Reality in whatever presents itself to me each day in 2024.

Each day I read, reflect and write on the selection, hoping to articulate the ways in which I come to know God/Divine Presence/Ultimate Reality via personal experience, impelled by the leading of my inner life.
