A Holy Boldness: there are no comfortable ruts

Jesuits are never content with the status quo, the known, the tried, the already existing. We are constantly driven to discover, redefine, and reach out for the magis (something more) … frontiers and boundaries are not obstacles or ends, but new challenges to be faced, new opportunities to be welcomed.
Society of Jesus

reach for the fringe is what I say
every nine years I change my way
mastering this I stretch to that
pack my shoes exchange my hat
no well worn rut is enough
to satisfy my dreamer stuff
although there’s plenty in my bank
I would rather walk the plank
than settle for the present state
with no new task for me to taste
from the unknown I will not hide
better to reach deep inside
depend on holy habitation
to infuse my occupation
consecrating words and action
with boldness and benefaction
reaching for the fringe I say
welcome to the unplumbed way

The Society of Jesus’ quote is found in today’s selection in An Ignatian Book of Days by Jim Manney, SJ, a series of daily reflections from the Spiritual Wisdom of St. Ignatius of Loyola. Throughout the book we hear the voices of St. Ignatius as well as many great thinkers and writers, long gone and present day, each uniquely revealing the way of finding God in all things. And that is my intention; to find God/Divine Presence/Ultimate Reality in whatever presents itself to me each day in 2024.

Each day I read, reflect and write on the selection, hoping to articulate the ways in which I come to know God/Divine Presence/Ultimate Reality via personal experience, impelled by the leading of my inner life.
