You Shouldn’t Be Surprised: They kill prophets

You speak of the enmities, the intrigues, the untruths which have been circulated about you. I am not at all surprised by this…. William J. Young SJ

“Children should be seen, not heard”
is what my father said
rather than spot hypocrisy
seal your lips instead

Refusing to submit to lies
I should not have been surprised
by evil claims, false attribution
demanding my persecution

Feigning respectability
tenured professor said
“If you report this data breech
you are as good as dead.”

Refusing to submit to lies
I should not have been surprised
by evil claims, false attribution
demanding my persecution

Unwilling to capitulate
to legislator’s bait
he promised my career
met it’s untimely fate

Refusing to submit to lies
I should not have been surprised
by evil claims, false attribution
demanding my persecution

For all those dire decades
I never owned the notion
that speaking truth to power
was prophetic devotion

“Blessed are you when people revile and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you….”
is what the Bible says
eviscerating kingmakers
who’d rather see me dead

Poem by Debra Asis

The William J. Young SJ quote is found in today’s selection in An Ignatian Book of Days by Jim Manney, a series of daily reflections from the Spiritual Wisdom of St. Ignatius of Loyola. Throughout the book we hear the voices of St. Ignatius as well as many great thinkers and writers, long gone and present day, each uniquely revealing the way of finding God in all things. And that is my intention; to find God/Divine Presence/Ultimate Reality in whatever presents itself to me each day in 2024.

Each day I read, reflect and write on the selection, hoping to articulate the ways in which I come to know God/Divine Presence/Ultimate Reality via personal experience, impelled by the leading of my inner life.
