Many of us have to hit a wall in order to wake up to the reality that we are living insane lives as long as we believe we can control things on our own.
William Barry SJ

Thank God I am not in control
if life depended on me the world would be
barren of epiphany
spectral color cloudscapes
continents bird feathers

Thank God I am not in control
if life depended on me the world would shrink
squeezed in my wee imagination
where would supernovas kangaroos comedians fit?
peaches surprises prickly pear cactus?
hammerhead sharks awe?

Thank God I am not in control
if life depended on me the world would wallow
cemented in comfortable ruts
forgetting to spin rotate wait
lose midnight morning tides
and what would dreams be riding?

Thank God I am not in control
if life depended on me the world would dwindle
beauty blemished by too many books bland decisions
eight minute recipes blind decrees etiquette
and never, absolutely never could I conceive
eight billion peerless fingerprints

ahhhh thank God I am not in control

William Barry, SJ’s above question is found in today’s selection in An Ignatian Book of Days by James Martin, SJ, a series of daily reflections from the Spiritual Wisdom of St. Ignatius of Loyola. Throughout the book we hear the voices of St. Ignatius as well as many great thinkers and writers, long gone and present day, each uniquely revealing the way of finding God in all things. And that is my intention; to find God/Divine Presence/Ultimate Reality in whatever presents itself to me each day in 2024.

Each day I read, reflect and write on the selection, hoping to articulate the ways in which I come to know God/Divine Presence/Ultimate Reality via personal experience, impelled by the leading of my inner life.
