When we are feeling lonely — if we are brave enough to resist the urge to call someone up, go shopping, or take a drug, or turn to music or TV or go to bed, if we are courageous enough to remain alone and instead of fleeing the pain, to go down into it — we will gradually notice another Presence there, silent, but benevolent and peaceful. Karl Rahner, SJ

Listen to the soundless song
God breathing in
God breathing out
One breath One life
weaving
waking
me you our Ethiopian cousin
the newborn kit
kangaroo
lost lonely alone

Listen to the soundless song
God breathing in
God breathing out
electric hum
creation
spiriting every stem and stone
rousing rounding
the shining of things
longing for the longing
of something more
delicate as down caressing suckling sighs
coarse as canyon walls slicing stubborn earth
restless as aspen leaves kissing wind
content as ancient sage collecting vigor

Listen
to the soundless song
God breathing in
God breathing out
One breath One life
never alone

Karl Rahner, SJ’s above quote is found in today’s selection in An Ignatian Book of Days by Jim Manney, a series of daily reflections from the Spiritual Wisdom of St. Ignatius of Loyola. Throughout the book we hear the voices of St. Ignatius as well as many great thinkers and writers, long gone and present day, each uniquely revealing the way of finding God in all things. And that is my intention; to find God/Divine Presence/Ultimate Reality in whatever presents itself to me each day in 2024.

Each day I read, reflect and write on the selection, hoping to articulate the ways in which I come to know God/Divine Presence/Ultimate Reality via personal experience, impelled by the leading of my inner life.
