“ Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity,
and cleanse me from my sin… You desire truth in the inward being;
therefore teach me wisdom in my secret heart.” Psalm 51.2,6

Wash not only my feet, O God

but water my heart.

Only Your goodness can right

my wandering eye

reform

my wagging word.

A boastful bag of bones am I

destined for dread dust

tell me why would Holiness wed

this moon-lighting pretender?

Tilted moon in wintertide

testing neither tongue nor trial

You abide

my betrayal.

Gag the deep throat gong

cut down the clattery carillon.

Wash not only my feet, O God

but water my heart.

Buried in barren baggage I beg

bare this lethal bank

til in the absence of nothing

nothing is there.

Right my wandering eye, O God

reform my wagging word

make me see, say and sing

boundless holiness

Lace my words with grace

salt my sentence wise.

Wash not only my feet, O God

but water my heart.

Traditionally an Ash Wednesday psalm, I believe this is a song/prayer worthy of all occasions. Let me and others know what you think.
