Valley: A word for today
Driving south from Santa Fe my car swerves to kiss
silver snake skimming the toes
of burnished cottonwood crowns.
Afloat amidst grave vishnu schist
1.78 billion years
exhale immortal raven snake.
The unquenchable thirst for life
carving, smoothing, moving mountains
steals me from speedy asphalt
to stumble in soggy valleys,
noble low places in the seam
of petrified mounts.
Life flees to hollows in the land,
valleys in the hand of God.
