The Ignatian outlook is both/and, not either/or. Prayer and work. Contemplation and action. God’s grace and our effort. Jim Manney

is it true…
whatever i ask in prayer
if i believe i have received it
it will be mine? ( Mark 11.24)*
or
is it more blessed to give
than to receive? (Acts 20.35)
yes

is it true…
when i pray
i should go to my room
shut the door
pray in secret? (Matt 6.6)
or
is it better to love with actions and truth
than with words or tongue? (1 John 3.18)
yes

is it true…
God grounded humanity
in the Garden
to work and care for it? (Genesis 2:15)
or
did God bless the seventh day making it holy
reminding us to rest from work? (Genesis 2:3)
yes

yes yes
it is grace
AND
it is grit

boundless generosity of grace
prepares us for all things
at all times
in every way (2 Corinthians 9:8)
AND
grace garners grit to work
in service for God (1 Corinthians 15:10)

Jim Manney’s quote is found in today’s selection in An Ignatian Book of Days by Jim Manney is a series of daily reflections from the Spiritual Wisdom of St. Ignatius of Loyola. Throughout the book we hear the voices of St. Ignatius as well as many great thinkers and writers, long gone and present day, each uniquely revealing the way of finding God in all things. And that is my intention; to find God/Divine Presence/Ultimate Reality in whatever presents itself to me each day in 2024.

Each day I read, reflect and write on the selection, hoping to articulate the ways in which I come to know God/Divine Presence/Ultimate Reality via personal experience, impelled by the leading of my inner life.
