This Isn’t How It Has To Be: where is your authority?

Good news — things don’t have to be this way! Find the work that God has for you and do it cheerfully, knowing that you’re part of a project to change the world! Jim Manney

Why?
Because I said so.
Why?
That’s just the way it is?
Why?
Stop questioning authority.

Authority?
Who or what has power
to make decisions?
command orders?
enforce obedience?

What if it’s not enough to know
existing state the status quo?
What if I am not content
with the way things are decline consent?
What if I refuse to believe
there’s nothing better to achieve?

Then I must turn around and take
the horn lion staff and stake
my claim in Something Greater than
standing culture’s stagnant plan

Aspen leaves like butterflies flutter
one woman writes another churns butter
bound by grace each multiplies
their distinct gift and sanctifies
the urgency of Something More
to be greater than before

Jim Manney’s quote is found in today’s selection in An Ignatian Book of Days by Jim Manney, a series of daily reflections from the Spiritual Wisdom of St. Ignatius of Loyola. Throughout the book we hear the voices of St. Ignatius as well as many great thinkers and writers, long gone and present day, each uniquely revealing the way of finding God in all things. And that is my intention; to find God/Divine Presence/Ultimate Reality in whatever presents itself to me each day in 2024.

Each day I read, reflect and write on the selection, hoping to articulate the ways in which I come to know God/Divine Presence/Ultimate Reality via personal experience, impelled by the leading of my inner life.
