The Value Of Earthly Things : listen, they are crying
…one can say withou hesitation, God grows in (humans) to the degree that their relationship to things is a more positive one.. this point must be emphasized because (humans are) always tempted to consider earthly things meaningless and of little value. For relationship to God, the ‘other things’ are absolutely necessary — they are the place of our service and worship. Karl Rahner, SJ
listen
all the earthly things are crying
blue whales and butterflies
sporting God’s stamp
weep
whipped cream and wine
bringing God’s sugar
whimper
wood table and white truffles
wearing God’s trademark
whine
all the quarks and leptons
bearing God’s signature
wail
listen
all the earthly things are crying
see in us
the glory of God
care for us
you
keepers of God’s name

Karl Rahner’s quote is found in today’s selection in An Ignatian Book of Days by Jim Manney, a series of daily reflections from the Spiritual Wisdom of St. Ignatius of Loyola. Throughout the book we hear the voices of St. Ignatius as well as many great thinkers and writers, long gone and present day, each uniquely revealing the way of finding God in all things. And that is my intention; to find God/Divine Presence/Ultimate Reality in whatever presents itself to me each day in 2024.
Each day I read, reflect and write on the selection, hoping to articulate the ways in which I come to know God/Divine Presence/Ultimate Reality via personal experience, impelled by the leading of my inner life.
