Today my image of suffering is blank……

I consent to the inescapable reality
no image today

… embrace the world as it really is: full of violence and pain. We refuse to let religion and grace become an easy analgesic, buffering us from the real sufferings around us. Instead, we embrace whatever suffering comes into our lives. Our suffering has a meaning in the “language of the cross.” Joseph Tetlow, SJ

Inescapable reality
rains
cornflowers white cosmos blooms
mudslide ravished wide-eyed earth

Inescapable reality
fires
soup kettle warm stone hearth
consumes grass field sister’s home

Inescapable reality
bellows
respirator’s hum hum hissssss
uproots ancient oak downs power lines

Consenting to the rigor of reality
mining for the mind of God
praise grace
collecting crumbs

My prying mind knows
I cannot know
the why of grace
the place of suffering

So I consent to inescapable reality
raining firing bellowing me
in the good company
of Divinity

Joseph Tetlow, SJ’s quote is found in today’s selection in An Ignatian Book of Days by James Martin, SJ, a series of daily reflections from the Spiritual Wisdom of St. Ignatius of Loyola. Throughout the book we hear the voices of St. Ignatius as well as many great thinkers and writers, long gone and present day, each uniquely revealing the way of finding God in all things. And that is my intention; to find God/Divine Presence/Ultimate Reality in whatever presents itself to me each day in 2024.

Each day I read, reflect and write on the selection, hoping to articulate the ways in which I come to know God/Divine Presence/Ultimate Reality via personal experience, impelled by the leading of my inner life.
