… it is important for us not to just do good things, but to do them for the right reasons. For it is certainly possible to perform seemingly good work for bad reasons; merely for money or fame, or to draw attention to ourselves, or to draw attention away from others, or to put off doing the less glamouous work we really should be doing. If we offer every task “for the greater glory of God” … we will begin with the only worthy end in mind. Mike Agualina and Kris Stubna

honestly
is there anything i do
for the greater glory of God?
anything that does not
feed my need for security?
anything that does not
benefit my bid for safety?
anything that does not
advance my aspiration for esteem?
anything that does not
patronize my press for power?
anything that does not
champion my control?
anything that does not end up
blessing me?

no matter my big-hearted
benevolent business
acts of kindness generosity
everything everything everything
turns its benediction
back to me…
last night i stretched my gloved hand
through the open window
of my comfortable car
delivered $10.00 to freezing hand
of the shivering man
commanding noxious corner
and his regal commendation
squeezed my heart
“God bless you.”
everything everything everything
turns its benediction
back to me…

Mike Agualina and Kris Stubna’s quote is found in today’s selection in An Ignatian Book of Days by Jim Manney is a series of daily reflections from the Spiritual Wisdom of St. Ignatius of Loyola. Throughout the book we hear the voices of St. Ignatius as well as many great thinkers and writers, long gone and present day, each uniquely revealing the way of finding God in all things. And that is my intention; to find God/Divine Presence/Ultimate Reality in whatever presents itself to me each day in 2024.

Each day I read, reflect and write on the selection, hoping to articulate the ways in which I come to know God/Divine Presence/Ultimate Reality via personal experience, impelled by the leading of my inner life.
