The “Feeling” of Feelings: What should I do?

In souls that are progressing to greater perfection, the action of the good angel is delicate, gentle, delightful. It may be compared to a drop of water penetrating a sponge. (by contrast) The action of the evil spirit upon such souls is violent, noisy and disturbing. It may be compared to a drop of water falling upon a stone. The Spiritual Exercises 335

O Holy One, is it me or is it You
tying knots in my gut
spilling tears reservoir?

O Holy One, is it me or is it You
rhyming lines and detours
writing my memoir?

Would that I could know
this way is one in You
What should I do?

Forgetting what I think I know
or want or wish or fear
I clear the way, await Your peace

Let feelings, like a windsock,
betray their source
compel my course

Like a sip of silver slipping
onto a cloud pillow
peace bellows… fall in this way

But when a hammer smashing metal
hatches anguish, gloom and woe
wisdom reckons… fall out this way

When feelings like a windsock
amplify their source
attention held in openness
satisfies my course

The quote of “The Spiritual Exercises” is found in to today’s selection in An Ignatian Book of Days by Jim Manney, a series of daily reflections from the Spiritual Wisdom of St. Ignatius of Loyola. Throughout the book we hear the voices of St. Ignatius as well as many great thinkers and writers, long gone and present day, each uniquely revealing the way of finding God in all things. And that is my intention; to find God/Divine Presence/Ultimate Reality in whatever presents itself to me each day in 2024.

Each day I read, reflect and write on the selection, hoping to articulate the ways in which I come to know God/Divine Presence/Ultimate Reality via personal experience, impelled by the leading of my inner life.
