The Devil Disguised as an Angel of Light: Shall we dance?

It is a mark of the evil spirit to assume the appearance of an angel of light…he will suggest holy and pious thoughts that are wholly in conformity with the sanctity of the soul…(then) he will endeavor little by little to end by drawing the soul into his hidden snares and evil designs. The Spiritual Exercises 320

The devil wearing hand made dance shoes
flashes an eye-catching smile
executes a mean two-step
grabs my hand
turns turns turns me dizzy
whispering wind on fire

I am beguiled
by the devil wearing hand made dance shoes
caressing my soft spot
kissing my achilles heel
I swoon
soulfully vulnerable to whispered words

“Such a graceful dancer
charming woman
perfect partner “
How the wily devil dances
courting my head
firing my pride

And the damn dancing devil
has his way with me
again

The William O’Malley, SJ quote is found in today’s selection in An Ignatian Book of Days by Jim Manney, a series of daily reflections from the Spiritual Wisdom of St. Ignatius of Loyola. Throughout the book we hear the voices of St. Ignatius as well as many great thinkers and writers, long gone and present day, each uniquely revealing the way of finding God in all things. And that is my intention; to find God/Divine Presence/Ultimate Reality in whatever presents itself to me each day in 2024.

Each day I read, reflect and write on the selection, hoping to articulate the ways in which I come to know God/Divine Presence/Ultimate Reality via personal experience, impelled by the leading of my inner life.
