Savoring God Is What We’re After : odor of sanctity

Thinking is really a pretty terrible way of encountering God. Words are even worse. I come around again and again to a deep intuition of Ignatius; sensing, savoring God is what we are after. Tim Muldoon

crested sweet leads
essence of amber spills
golden cedar smoke fills
my heart trough
yearning

hint of orange beguiles
cut bluegrass tickles
vanilla pine wood lures
odour of sanctity seduces
ploughed ground and ashes

oil of olive fuses
cinnamon and liquid myrrh
sanctifies suffering and death
whiffs of frankincense rapt prayers
expose eau de joy

every fleeting fragrance harbors
the hiddenness of God
born of flesh stoking senses
provoking my pace to hasten
chase divine perfume

(all of which makes me think of my favorite Song of Songs 1.2–4)

Let him kiss me with the kisses of his mouth;
for thy breasts are better than wine.
The fragrance of thine ointments is
better than all spices;
thy name is ointment poured forth; therefore do the young maidens love thee. They have drawn thee.
We will run after thee into the fragrance
of thine ointments.

The Time Muldoon quote is found in today’s selection in An Ignatian Book of Days by Jim Manney, a series of daily reflections from the Spiritual Wisdom of St. Ignatius of Loyola. Throughout the book we hear the voices of St. Ignatius as well as many great thinkers and writers, long gone and present day, each uniquely revealing the way of finding God in all things. And that is my intention; to find God/Divine Presence/Ultimate Reality in whatever presents itself to me each day in 2024.

Each day I read, reflect and write on the selection, hoping to articulate the ways in which I come to know God/Divine Presence/Ultimate Reality via personal experience, impelled by the leading of my inner life.
