what will it take to set aside
my trepidation and my pride
expose the crevice in my heart
roused wound that binds my better part?
whom shall I trust to walk beside
my sinking heart and shaky stride
to lean on when I fall apart
to help me a new course to chart?
there is no prospect if I lie
mask the wound my heartbreak hide
banish suffering to start
performing life as if an art
compassion cannot bridge the tide
of wailing words and teary eyes
until I unearth the part
of my base and beggarly heart

James Martin’s quote is found in today’s selection in An Ignatian Book of Days by James Martin, SJ, a series of daily reflections from the Spiritual Wisdom of St. Ignatius of Loyola.
