We should not dispute stubbornly with anyone, rather we should patiently give our reasons with the purpose of declaring the truth lest our neighbor remain in error, and not that we should have the upper hand.
St. Ignatius Loyola

what rides above right or wrong
what undergirds good or bad
what determines win or lose
what moral system do I choose

what do I doggedly defend
what values do I recommend
on what do I surely insist
what do I righteously resist

on what foot do I plant my stand
when I piously demand
my way regardless of reason
no fact dare sway my decision

making no effort to decide
right course of action without pride
caring solely for number one
what moral high ground do I shun?

St. Ignatius Loyola’s quote is found in today’s selection in An Ignatian Book of Days by Jim Manney, a series of daily reflections from the Spiritual Wisdom of St. Ignatius of Loyola. Throughout the book we hear the voices of St. Ignatius as well as many great thinkers and writers, long gone and present day, each uniquely revealing the way of finding God in all things. And that is my intention; to find God/Divine Presence/Ultimate Reality in whatever presents itself to me each day in 2024.

Each day I read, reflect and write on the selection, hoping to articulate the ways in which I come to know God/Divine Presence/Ultimate Reality via personal experience, impelled by the leading of my inner life.
