Patience: A word for today
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. This is what we hear St. Paul counsel the new church in Galatia (Galatians 5: 22–23). Patience blooms and ripens as we allow the seed in our hearts to crack open, the tears of our troubles to water it, and the light of our faith to shine upon it.
Beginning with consent, patience says “Yes” to the present moment.
…. Yes, I will engage this trouble
…. Yes, I will exercise self restraint
…. Yes, I will suffer without getting angry
…. Yes, I will wait in uncertainly
Continuing with consent, patience relies on Spirit
presiding in the present moment.
Ending with consent, patience begins again saying “Yes”
regardless of the twisted tides and turns of the present moment.
