Does a soul who has never offended need mercy? …the confidence of a notorious sinner honors God most of all. For he is so convinced of God’s infinite mercy that all his sins seem no more than an atom in its presence.
St. Claude de la Colombière, SJ

Mercy. I need mercy.

The bird in my chest itches, urges, rouses me
send a card to my ailing neighbor
delete this maligned email
resist adding my grist to gossip
I really should, but I have not

Mercy. I need mercy.

The bird in my chest prompts me
be more gracious
peaceful
loving
I really should, but I have not

Mercy. I need mercy.

The bird in my chest sings me
naked before truth
goodness
beauty
I see my self, less than my self

Mercy. I need mercy.

This sorry soul
concedes her sin
singular forgetting
who and whose
I am

Mercy, I need mercy.

The bird in my chest never ceases
singing her sympathetic song
“Turn around
hurry home
mercy is running to greet you.”

Poem by Debra Asis

The St. Claude de la Colombière, SJ quote is found in to today’s selection in An Ignatian Book of Days by Jim Manney, a series of daily reflections from the Spiritual Wisdom of St. Ignatius of Loyola. Throughout the book we hear the voices of St. Ignatius as well as many great thinkers and writers, long gone and present day, each uniquely revealing the way of finding God in all things. And that is my intention; to find God/Divine Presence/Ultimate Reality in whatever presents itself to me each day in 2024.

Each day I read, reflect and write on the selection, hoping to articulate the ways in which I come to know God/Divine Presence/Ultimate Reality via personal experience, impelled by the leading of my inner life.
