Jeweled Breadcrumb #48 : praying ‘good morning’
… with all of my wit and all of my will perplexed by the fractured world puzzle, I cannot even say ‘good morning’ to my neighbor without first going to the mountaintop to pray. Praying, not for intercession or petition, adoration or confession. I pray to be available for the stealthy Guest to inhabit this guest house, rousing blood and flesh to ‘good morning.’
seek first the presence of God
then every word work wonder follows
wrapped in silver silk shawl
still as burnt umber clouds kissing
thunderous mountain
i am one tapping
wisdom’s door welcoming
question’s Guest
i dare make no history
meet no man child beast
until the i i think i am
kisses the mountain
then, only then, may i say
‘good morning.’
a sheet of blue glass subdues
cloud towers surrender
new light washes cinnabar wall delivers
‘good morning.’
seek first the presence of God
then every word work wonder follows
Breadcrumb
Early in the morning, staring out my study window I reflect on the mysterious quality of morning asking, ‘How shall I face another fractious day?’
Early in the morning while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went away to a secluded place and was praying. (Mark 1.35) I wonder if Jesus was inspired by the words he studied in the Torah, YHWY instructing Moses, Be ready in the morning, and come up in the morning to Mount Sinai, and present yourself there to me on the top of the mountain? (Exodus 34.2) Doing exactly what YHWT instructed, Moses receives the second version of the Decalogue or Ten Commandments, God’s covenant with seriously wayward humanity.
For decades these words of wise counsel held no sway with me. But today, with all of my wit and all of my will perplexed by the fractured world puzzle, I cannot even say ‘good morning’ to my neighbor without first going to the mountaintop to pray. Praying, not for intercession or petition, adoration or confession. I pray to be available for the stealthy Guest to inhabit this guest house, rousing blood and flesh to ‘good morning.’
Thank you for reading these words, created by grace and the grit of a real human being. Debra Asis

The assignment that brings me to the writing of these words is to unapologetically tell the story of how God nudges, cajoles, drop kicks and masters me to be the real human being that I am … becoming … following God’s Jeweled Breadcrumbs. My daily writing challenge for 2025 is to share the Breadcrumbs with you.
