Jeweled Breadcrumb #44 : grace sufficient to swallow tears
This morning I hang my faith on the promise that the incapacity of my tears is made potent by God’s boundless grace.
US turns her back to allies … tears
children freeze to death in Gaza … tears
1000s of federal workers fired … tears
a man shovels rubble from his war torn home … tears
postal workers fight for mail … tears
ICE charged to deport 100,000 immigrant children … tears
Department of Energy Office of Nuclear Safety undone … tears
media access to White House uncertain … tears
sitting on a comfortable chair in my beautiful condo … tears
… tears … tangled in tears tumbling
flushing 57 news minutes
i rescue no prayer sufficient to the tears … tears
O God O God … i hear
My grace is sufficient for you.
give me faith sufficient to swallow one tear
and all of them will follow
the salty ocean of grace
Breadcrumb
Last night I barely made it through the news. Each headline story squeezed my gut, choked my throat and stung my sight with searing tears. In the wake of the newshour I wandered zombie-like; unfocused, untethered, undone. Waking to a dappled cloud sky, this morning I am as chilly as the barren aspen tree, and empty. Empty until I recall to heart St. Paul’s words to the people of Corinth.
Following a rather lavish description of his conversion experience, Paul explains the pain he cannot escape, “…to keep me from being too elated, a thorn was given to me in the flesh, a messenger of Satan to torment me, to keep me from being too elated. Three times I appealed to the Lord about this, that it would leave me, but he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for power is made perfect in weakness.’ (2 Corinthians 12.7–9)
This morning I hang my faith on the promise that the incapacity of my tears is made potent by God’s boundless grace.

The assignment that brings me to the writing of these words is to unapologetically tell the story of how God nudges, cajoles, drop kicks and masters me to be the real human being that I am … becoming … following God’s Jeweled Breadcrumbs. My daily writing challenge for 2025 is to share the Breadcrumbs with you.
