A scientist must choose to measure either position or momentum, either energy or mass of a particle. One cannot accurately grok both at the same time. I believe the principle applies to faith and fear. We must choose faith or fear, but in either case, we cannot escape uncertainty.

calculating fear
i fail to nail down faith
orienting faith
fear forgets her fleet feet

sisters of uncertainty
faith … fear
conceiving one
we cannot comprehend the other

therefore i choose
uncertainty of faith
erase
fickle face of fear

The other day when a friend spoke of applying principles of physics in his family therapy practice, it got me wondering. What light might physics shine on the issue currently occupying my mind? Faith in the face of fear.

It occurred to me that both faith and fear find their root in uncertainty which led me to wonder how Heisenberg’s Principle of Uncertainty (1927) might apply. Here it is in summary. According to quantum mechanics, the more precisely the position (momentum) of a particle is given, the less precisely can one say what its momentum (position) is. This is (a simplistic and preliminary formulation of) the quantum mechanical uncertainty principle for position and momentum. Click here to read more.

I believe the principle applies to faith and fear. We must choose the uncertainty of faith or fear, but in either case we cannot escape uncertainty. It is fundamental.
