Jeweled Breadcrumb #39 : vintner’s winter work
… it seems the assignment for me today (no doubt for many days to come) is to stretch my mind and every morsel of my being to envision what I see as radical evicting, eviscerating, excoriating in these United States, may at least in part be life’s mysterious vintner’s winter work.
pruned snipped whittled away
withered branch
wrinkling
desiccating leaf dust
dwindling
wordless writer inquires
is this vintner’s winter work?
pruning guiding dormant vine?
training host for tender twig?
i long to leap to bud break
and flower
but i bend to be tied
to timber trellis
weather ice
lose fledging leaf
someday savor spicy wine
Breadcrumb
The barren aspen branches outside my window mirror how I feel this morning. Empty. Nothing is flourishing in me or my study or the world that I can see. Then I remember, “Every branch that does bear fruit is pruned that it will be even more fruitful.” (John 15.2) In these wisdom words I choose to put my faith, my hope. Oh dear. If indeed I do so, it seems the assignment for me today (no doubt for many days to come) is to stretch my mind and every morsel of my being to envision that what I see as radical evicting, eviscerating, excoriating in these United States, may at least in part be life’s mysterious vintner’s winter work. I also remember, the vintner is a shepherd, cultivating relationships among the vines, the weather and the winery, so the wine harvest will “gladden the Spirit.”

The assignment that brings me to the writing of these words is to unapologetically tell the story of how God nudges, cajoles, drop kicks and masters me to be the real human being that I am … becoming … following God’s Jeweled Breadcrumbs. My daily writing challenge for 2025 is to share the Breadcrumbs with you.
