Incomprehensible Mystery: I don’t know

For Christianity is not a formula which makes everything clear, but the radical submission of myself to an incomprehensible Mystery Who (that) has revealed himself (itself) as ineffable love. Karl Rahner, SJ

I don’t know, I don’t know
why are these words so troublesome
though they do not demand
I break my back
strain to success
conquer onerous tasks
heft herculean obstacles
decide delinquent dilemmas
justify the tilt of earth
feign certainty in chaos

I don’t know, I don’t know
what freedom lurks
within these irksome words
to ease my back
release success
relinquish onerous tasks
sidestep obstacles
accept delinquent dilemmas
marvel at the tilt of earth
welcome Mystery with awe

I don’t know, I don’t know
what supports my back
accepts my failure
eases my burden
opens my mind
entertains paradox
undergirds creation
tantalizes my heart
breathing the unfathomable
Mystery of love

Poem by Debra Asis

Karl Rahner, SJ’s above question is found in today’s selection in An Ignatian Book of Days by Jim Manney, a series of daily reflections from the Spiritual Wisdom of St. Ignatius of Loyola. Throughout the book we hear the voices of St. Ignatius as well as many great thinkers and writers, long gone and present day, each uniquely revealing the way of finding God in all things. And that is my intention; to find God/Divine Presence/Ultimate Reality in whatever presents itself to me each day in 2024.

Each day I read, reflect and write on the selection, hoping to articulate the ways in which I come to know God/Divine Presence/Ultimate Reality via personal experience, impelled by the leading of my inner life.
