If You Can Talk, You Can Pray
“…prayer springs naturally from our humanity.” Prayer isn’t abnormal. It’s not a supernatural “spiritual” state. It’s as natural as conversation. Jim Manney
O Holy One what would you say
were i to speak my truth today?
dare i tell my tale out loud
protest my progress profit proud
express my wonton wildness
would you revere my aliveness?
if i labored to admit
foibles failings
i commit
would you litigate my life
define my crime
deny my light?
O Holy One what would you say
were i to speak my truth today?
peel the pelt of piety
expose my impropriety?
would you receive
my profane prayer
as something more
than rancid air
strained through the teeth
of bumbling bloke
seeking solace
prospecting hope?
O Holy One what would you say
were i to speak my truth today?
failing to find your residence
in candidates for president
i pray you alert my eyes
to confidently recognize
reality from fiction
advantage from affliction
commission me
to become free
signing sure sighted publication
of your informed manifestation

Jim Manney’s’quote is found in today’s selection in An Ignatian Book of Days by Jim Manney is a series of daily reflections from the Spiritual Wisdom of St. Ignatius of Loyola. Throughout the book we hear the voices of St. Ignatius as well as many great thinkers and writers, long gone and present day, each uniquely revealing the way of finding God in all things. And that is my intention; to find God/Divine Presence/Ultimate Reality in whatever presents itself to me each day in 2024.
Each day I read, reflect and write on the selection, hoping to articulate the ways in which I come to know God/Divine Presence/Ultimate Reality via personal experience, impelled by the leading of my inner life.
