Human Ingenuity or the Hand of God?

How are we to interpret the alternately serendipitous and disappointing, unexpected and unpredictable, courses of our lives? What is happening when death or financial disaster forces us to reconsider what we want from life?….. when we succeed beyond our wildest imaginings?… Do such cases merely vindicate human ingenuity, resilience, fortitude and imagination? Or, is God too at work in some ineffable way? Chris Lowrey

If all that I have or call my own
including my memory, understanding and entire will*
is gift
then there is no question
my ingenuity confirms
the efficacious hand of God

The Gift

In the grip of ignorance
and garishness of light
unswayed by growling thunder
earth’s tremorous delight
living within boundaries
observe what passes by
in consecrated darkness
the gleaming jewel abides.

There is but one treasure
one incomparable gift
the greathearted I AM
Being, such as is.
Giving is the vessel
in which Being receives
Given is prime mover
naked singularity.

This evanescent vigor
impels all humankind
to turn the mystic wheel of life
incarnate the Divine.

* From the Suscipe, a prayer by St. Ignatius Loyola

Chris Lowrey’s above quote is found in today’s selection in An Ignatian Book of Days by Jim Manney SJ, a series of daily reflections from the Spiritual Wisdom of St. Ignatius of Loyola. Throughout the book we hear the voices of St. Ignatius as well as many great thinkers and writers, long gone and present day, each uniquely revealing the way of finding God in all things. And that is my intention; to find God/Divine Presence/Ultimate Reality in whatever presents itself to me each day in 2024.

Each day I read, reflect and write on the selection, hoping to articulate the ways in which I come to know God/Divine Presence/Ultimate Reality via personal experience, impelled by the leading of my inner life.
