we live only by hope, though that is very uncertain whether it may not turn out rather evil than good. Still, our labors are just as pleasing and acceptable as if we were to obtain that for which we are striving.

to dare my hope
reign in my will
shorten my scope
for hope to happen
I must turn
my face inward
bear down and learn
to plant and plow
and cultivate
lush garden of
unswerving faith
that Something I am
want to grasp
exceeds my will
is unsurpassed
inviting me
to set aside
clinging to life
pleasing my pride
defying danger’s
toothless dare
earth’s simple fruit
suffice to share
