Formed By God’s Grace: it is enough
A thick and shapeless tree trunk would never believe that it could become a statue, admired as a miracle of sculpture, and would never submit itself to the chisel of the sculptor who sees by his genius what he can make of it.
St. Ignatius Loyola
Truth be told
the I that I call me
would never take on the 365 day writing challenge
reflect, write and publish on Medium
without bowing to the skill of the Sculptor
hammering rough and rowdy edges
chiseling substance into shape
filing fine points
That is why each day I begin with St. Ignatias’ prayer
Take, Lord, and receive all my liberty
my memory, understanding, my entire will
all that I have and call my own
You have given to me
To you, Lord, I return it.
Do with it as you will.
Give me only your love and grace
that is enough for me.
The I that I call me recalls
words wrought from nothing
caught from less than yesterday’s itch
falling at the knees of the I
that I call You
awakened seed of my soul
sovereign sculptor of this empty bowl

St. Ignatius Loyola’s quote is found in today’s selection in An Ignatian Book of Days by Jim Manney, SJ, a series of daily reflections from the Spiritual Wisdom of St. Ignatius of Loyola. Throughout the book we hear the voices of St. Ignatius as well as many great thinkers and writers, long gone and present day, each uniquely revealing the way of finding God in all things. And that is my intention; to find God/Divine Presence/Ultimate Reality in whatever presents itself to me each day in 2024.
Each day I read, reflect and write on the selection, hoping to articulate the ways in which I come to know God/Divine Presence/Ultimate Reality via personal experience, impelled by the leading of my inner life.
