Everywhere There Is Good To Be Done: The gift of a life to be celebrated
This morning I received a text from a friend who will celebrate the life of her younger sister, a woman who has been her dependent for decades. Here is a paraphrase of what she writes.
“Today’s reading (from An Ignatian Book of Days) is so in line with today’s gift of celebrating my sister’s life. It is so her (a gift) and so how I want to see each life that comes into my world today.” (Words of a grieving woman)
““We are indebted to all (people) in every condition and in every place” — what a generous spirit! For St. Peter Faber, every person he met was a gift.”
Each Life Is Gift
Obedient in her tireless deeds
she succors her sister
spoils her knees
Pouring grace upon grace
regardless of strife
she holds nothing back
for her sister’s life
Though tired or grouchy
or burdened she be
the gift of her sister
she mostly could see
Now panning for gold
in death’s ruthless rift
soulful sister sees nothing
but life as gift.
Poetry by Debra Asis
St. Peter Faber, SJ quote above is found in An Ignatian Book of Days by Jim Manney, a series of daily reflections from the Spiritual Wisdom of St. Ignatius of Loyola. Throughout the book we hear the voices of St. Ignatius as well as many great thinkers and writers, long gone and present day, each uniquely revealing the way of finding God in all things. And that is my intention; to find God/Divine Presence/Ultimate Reality in whatever presents itself to me each day in 2024.
Each day I will read, reflect and write on the selection, hoping to articulate the ways in which I come to know God/Divine Presence/Ultimate Reality via personal experience, impelled by the leading of my inner life.
