Ever Open To Something New: Run from your rut
Looking back on our lives, can any of us honestly say we knew exactly the path our lives would take? Isn’t it true that God has moved about in each of our lives and surprised us with all manner of twists and turns we could not have predicted or perhaps even desired? Patrick McGrath, SJ
O, to wallow in my feathered rut
mud bathing my knees
wind storms and such
But wily God steps in my dirt
tickles and teases
triggers raw hurt
Poised to protest, fingers in my ear
but I cannot pause
consolations tears
Staring straight into my heart God insists
there’s no better place to break ground
than this
Run from that rut is what you must do
being ever open
to something new
Masterly God recasts my life
upends careers
trading riches for strife
Mining the plenty of poverty
the God of surprises
sets me free.
Poem by Debra Asis
Patrick McGrath’s quote is found in to today’s selection in An Ignatian Book of Days by Jim Manney, a series of daily reflections from the Spiritual Wisdom of St. Ignatius of Loyola. Throughout the book we hear the voices of St. Ignatius as well as many great thinkers and writers, long gone and present day, each uniquely revealing the way of finding God in all things. And that is my intention; to find God/Divine Presence/Ultimate Reality in whatever presents itself to me each day in 2024.
Each day I read, reflect and write on the selection, hoping to articulate the ways in which I come to know God/Divine Presence/Ultimate Reality via personal experience, impelled by the leading of my inner life.
