Do You Create Unity: Or with a log in your eye fail to see?
Now I appeal to you… that all of you should be in agreement and that there should be no divisions among you… (I Corinthians 1.10)
Is it a fool’s folly to seek unity
building sky castles foster fantasy?
I scan the land hear today’s word
dealing deadly dissension, divisive discord
I mutter and stutter, bury my head
the hunger for unity surly is dead.
So I turn to my look-alike friends to review
opinions and interests we agree are true
Here my affection like crocuses blooms
in the affable space of affinity’s rooms
But what in the world is a person to do
with the ones whose opinions and interests aren’t true?
OOOPS. What if I am wrong?
The log in my eye is as big as a boat
seeing thistles and thorns and the other’s wrong vote
How would it be were I quick to expect
goodness instead of condemning to death
the interests of others who do not align
with the opinions I cling to as mine?
What will it take to get out of my ditch
to stretch and inspire me to build a bridge?
To amputate judgment from my feathered nest
presume that the other is bringing their best?
Responding to today’s selection in An Ignatian Book of Days by Jim Manney, a series of daily reflections from the Spiritual Wisdom of St. Ignatius of Loyola. Throughout the book we hear the voices of St. Ignatius as well as many great thinkers and writers, long gone and present day, each uniquely revealing the way of finding God in all things. And that is my intention; to find God/Divine Presence/Ultimate Reality in whatever presents itself to me each day in 2024.
Each day I read, reflect and write on the selection, hoping to articulate the ways in which I come to know God/Divine Presence/Ultimate Reality via personal experience, impelled by the leading of my inner life.
