Salvadore Dali Crucifixion

When we do not feel like believing, praying or serving in love, it is time to act as if we do feel it. This is not an act of dishonesty. Rather, we are acting in line with what we believe even though, at this moment, the emotional drive for such acting is absent. George Aschenbrenner, SJ

a wise teacher told me to pray
switch places with Jesus on the cross
the only thing that I could say
‘I do not feel it’

a wise teacher told me to pray for the desire
to switch places with Jesus on the cross
the only thing I could say
‘I do not have the desire’

a wise teacher told me to pray for the desire to desire
to switch places with Jesus on the cross
the only thing I could say
‘I need to step further back and pray for the desire to desire to desire, maybe even further back’

a wise teacher smiled
commended my desire

George Aschenbrenner, SJ’s quote is found in today’s selection in An Ignatian Book of Days by James Martin, SJ, a series of daily reflections from the Spiritual Wisdom of St. Ignatius of Loyola. Throughout the book we hear the voices of St. Ignatius as well as many great thinkers and writers, long gone and present day, each uniquely revealing the way of finding God in all things. And that is my intention; to find God/Divine Presence/Ultimate Reality in whatever presents itself to me each day in 2024.

Each day I read, reflect and write on the selection, hoping to articulate the ways in which I come to know God/Divine Presence/Ultimate Reality via personal experience, impelled by the leading of my inner life.
